In the field of psychology, informed consent has been a key to help the persons to get the right information and understanding that enable them to decide about their health or to agree to take part in research. To provide suitable information to patients, educational level, ability to understand and legal and sociocultural factors must be taken in account. Every person should be fully informed about the procedure which he/she is subject, explaining the benefits, risks, possible outcomes and alternatives. Some psychologist have reacted against the regulations of the informed consent made by COLPSIC in Colombia. Objective: Make a revision of the theory about informed consent to understand its development, characteristics and consequences of it in Psychology. Methods: A literature review in PubMed, Ebscoltost, Dialnet, Elsevier, Sciencie Direct, and Google Scholar databases; using the terms: Informed consent, psychology and patient autonomy. The selected articles had to be reviews or investigations in Latin America and more specifically in Colombia that is the focus country of this study. The articles had to be published in English or Spanish. Gray literature has been used and included in the bibliography section at the end of this text. Conclusion: The use of informed consent is regulated by ley 1090 of 2006. There has been a discussion about the use of a written document in psychology due to several difficulties profesionals ague not only in clinical attention but also in different psychology fields.
