(Bogotá: Fundación Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud, 2017-02-10) Herrera Ariza, Jorge Luis; Hernández Marín, Luisa Andrea
Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a pathology consisting in the appearance of recurrent episodes of airflow limitation during sleep, secondary to alterations of anatomical and/or functional type. It is a condition that compromises significantly the quality of life of sufferers and carries important complications that can affect multiple systems and can even lead to death. Objectives: To establish a protocol that provides recommendations for care, diagnosis and treatment of OSAHS, based primarily on clinical practice guidelines (CPG), assessed by AGREE II. Methods: A review was performed on OSAHS clinical practice guidelines in english and spanish, published between 2000 and 2016, which were valued with the instrument for evaluating clinical practice guidelines AGREE II. Results: After searching the main compilers and CPG developers, 64 OSAHS CPG were founded, of which, 8 guides were assessed with the AGREE II instrument. Of the evaluated guides, 7 showed to have rigor and independence > 60%, which was a selection criteria of the guidelines for obtaining recommendations. Conclusions: the main tool for the diagnosis of OSAHS is the polysomnogram. The treatment of choice for OSAHS is CPAP, because it has an impact in reducing apneas and in the clinical improvement, with few side effects. Surgery has specific indications, and rarely it is proposed as isolated treatment.
