Introduction: Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common endocrine neoplasm; therefore, markers with possible prognostic utility have been evaluated.Objective: To analyze the presence of RET/PTC1 rearrangement, lymphocytic thyroiditis and associated clinical features in patients with papillary thyroid cancer treated at the Hospital de San José in Bogotá, Colombia.Materials and methods: Clinical records of patients with complete thyroidectomy and diagnosis of papillary cancer were retrospectively identified. RNA was extracted from tumor tissue, and cDNA was obtained using inverse transcriptase to detect the rearrangement of the RET/PTC1 gene by means of qPCR.Results: 55 patients with papillary thyroid cancer were selected; 93% were females, and the mean age was 45.8 years. The most frequent histological variant was classic (49%). A relationship was found between lymphocytic thyroiditis and the number of positive nodes in segments other than central draining, as well as thyroiditis and antithyroid antibody value. No RET/PTC1 rearrangement expression was found.Conclusions: A relationship between lymphocytic thyroiditis and the number of positive nodes in segments other than central draining was found. Other molecular markers should be searched to differentiate the prognosis of these patients.

A 43-year-old man presented with two-month history of fatigue, weakness, paleness, rectal bleeding, sweating, and weight loss of 10 kg in the past one month. A complete blood count revealed anaemia. The patient underwent a right hemicolectomy. The microscopic examination revealed an adenosquamous carcinoma associated with a mucinous adenocarcinoma in a patient with microsatellite instability due to loss of MLH1 and PMS2 expression and retention of MSH2 and MSH6 expression in both the squamous and glandular components. We also observed an atypical immunohistochemical phenotype in the adenocarcinoma component showing CK7 expression and reduced CK20 and CDX2 expression

Denominado óxido de metileno (HCHO o CH2O), su estado gaseoso e incoloro con olor fuerte, soluble en agua, fácilmente polimeriza haciéndolo viable en la desinfección y conservación y al diluirlo en agua y metanol se convierte en formol. Pequeñas concentraciones de formol, causan irritación ocular y en el conducto respiratorio y concentraciones mayores conlleva a consecuencias severas, como el cáncer e incluso causar la muerte.La IARC lo determinó como agente cancerígeno de clase 1, en el año 2006, en base a investigaciones realizadas para determinar la categoría de este reactivo, se haya un alto índice de personas relacionadas con este agente que presentaron carcinomas nasofaríngeos. En Colombia el decreto 1477 del 5 de agosto de 2014 (15), emite la nueva tabla de enfermedades, relacionadas con la exposición laboral al formol: Código Evento por exposición al formol J68.0 Bronquitis química aguda J68.1 Edema pulmonar químico J68.2 Inflamación de vías respiratorias altas derivada de productos químicos, gases humos y vapores J68.3 Síndrome de disfunción reactiva de las vías aéreas J68.4 Bronquiolitis obliterante crónica, enfisema crónico difuso, fibrosis pulmonar crónica. T59.2 Efectos tóxicos (2).
