Las recomendaciones actuales del tratamiento se basan principalmente en la experiencia clínica de expertos en el campo y en extrapolaciones del manejo de personas con hipogonadismo. Previo al inicio de la terapia hormonal es indispensable que un psiquiatra experto en disforia confirme el diagnóstico y que el paciente esté dispuesto a recibir apoyo psicoterapéutico durante todo el proceso de afirmación, tener una experiencia en la vida real adoptando un rol pleno del género opuesto durante 12 meses y conocer las consecuencias, riesgos y beneficios de la terapia.
